Natural Aging and Urinary Loss: Facts, Causes and Prevention

Natural aging does not necessarily involve urine leakage. Urinary incontinence is not an inevitable consequence of aging. Understanding the true causes often requires going back in time, even years before symptoms appear.

During menopause, women experience a decrease in female hormones, such as estrogen and progesterone, which can lead to weakened pelvic floor muscles and the occurrence of urine leakage, among other things.

Between the ages of 45 and 55, production of these hormones gradually declines, leading to irregular menstrual cycles and eventually menopause. The transition to menopause is one of the most profound phases in a woman's life and can be accompanied by symptoms such as hot flashes, increased risk of osteoporosis and, in some cases, involuntary urine loss.

However, it is important to emphasize that urinary incontinence should not be considered a normal part of aging. The roots of this problem often lie in past events such as pregnancy and childbirth, even if they occurred without significant complications. Pregnancy and childbirth can weaken the pelvic floor muscles, and this weakening can worsen during menopause due to the decrease in female hormones.

An effective way to prevent urine leakage later in life is regular exercise of the pelvic floor muscles. These muscles are often misused or unknowingly neglected, but fortunately, pelvic floor training can be done at any age and is helpful.

If urine leakage is limited to a few drops, the use of panty pads can help keep you comfortable. However, it is important to note that ordinary sanitary pads are not appropriate, as they can cause infections. Special pads can be used instead, which can be placed inside regular underwear. Make sure the crotch of the underwear is wide enough to fully support the bandage. Absorbent and washable underwear are also available, which are discreet and very comfortable to wear.
