Professor of neurobiology Annelies Bronckaerts of Uhasselt shares valuable insights in an engaging online lecture from University of Flanders. Watch it now here and find out how to understand stroke and what you can do to prevent it.
What is a Stroke?
A Cerebrovascular Accident, or stroke, is a serious medical condition in which the blood supply to part of the brain is suddenly interrupted. This can have dramatic consequences since, unlike skin cells, our brains do not make new cells. In the lecture, Professor Bronckaerts explains how blockages can occur and the consequences.
Risk Factors and Prevention: Healthy Living as Key
While genetic predisposition can play a role, other risk factors include smoking, high cholesterol and diabetes. The good news is that you can reduce your risk by adopting a healthy lifestyle. Exercising regularly, avoiding stress, quitting smoking and eating healthy are crucial steps. Health checks and screening tests can also identify potential risks early.
Recognizing Symptoms: The FAST Method In a stroke, every second is crucial. It is essential to recognize symptoms quickly. One helpful tool is the FAST Method:
- F (Face): Check the face for asymmetry, such as a crooked smile.
- A (Arm): Look for movement problems in the arms, especially coordinated movements.
- S (Speech): Note speech problems, such as difficulty speaking and understanding.
- T (Time): Time is of the essence; hurry to the hospital for faster treatments.
Don't let this valuable information pass you by. Watch the lecture and share it with your loved ones. Knowledge is power, and it can save lives!
