Filters, mouthpieces and extension tubes for Urias®-Johnstone splint
The plastic "crystals" in these filters dry the air before it goes into the splint. The granules can optionally be dried in an ordinary oven at low t °, making them reusable. The disposable mouthpieces are for hygiene purposes and fit on the filters or extension tubes (not on the splint itself). The extension tube is 30 cm and fits on any splint.

Inflatable mouth splints, developed by Margaret Johnstone, this concept is constantly being updated by the scientific group PANat http://www.panat.info.
They are used in the therapy of stroke and MS patients, plexus injuries and all conditions that can lead to contractures.
Target:
- positioning (for a limited time)
- maximum sensory input due to the well-distributed pressure
Possible applications:
- movement therapy: one can practice proximal joints (e.g. shoulder) while the distal (e.g. elbow, wrist and fingers) do not get a chance to get in a wrong pattern
- premature weight transfer to a perpetual limb
- aid for limb control: eg. in gait rehabilitation, an arm splint is put on to prevent associated reactions from occurring
Uriass splints are made from a specially developed PVC. The inner layer is a unique soft PVC that feels pleasant to the patient and distributes the pressure extremely evenly.
The outer layer is firmer and provides stability.
Because the splints are transparent, you always have a perfect visual control of the position of the limb.
Via the link to PANat you can download a brochure with theoretical and practical explanations.
Inflation must be done by mouth, because only then can you be sure of a good temperature and a maximum pressure of 40 mm Hg.
Special filters can be used to prevent breath moisture from entering the splint during inflation.
For hygiene, small individual mouthpieces are available for use on the filters or extension tubes (not directly on the splint).
The splint should not be applied to a limb in direct sunlight, otherwise a greenhouse effect will occur and burns may occur.
Safety regulations:
- during 'hands on' or 'hands off' therapy sessions (depending on the splint) max. 20 minutes or 1 hour / session for the splints for adults, with a maximum pressure of 40mmHg
- always use indoors, no direct sunlight
- Clean splints after use with normal soap and allow to dry thoroughly with the zipper open by hanging the splint
- limited service life, depending on the conditions of use, cracks will develop in the area around the weld seam after a while
