Hand pump for inflating Urias®-Johnstone splints
This hand pump can be used for small Johnstone splints or any other inflatable item with an inner Ø of 6 mm. The pump is equipped with a safety at 35 mm Hg. A Johnstone's splint is not inflated above 40 mm Hg for blood circulation reasons.
Technical info:
- contains latex

Mouth inflatable splints, developed by Margaret Johnstone. This concept is constantly updated by the scientific group PANat http://www.panat.info.
They are used in therapy for stroke and MS patients, plexus injuries and all conditions that can lead to contractures.
Goal:
- positioning (for a limited time)
- maximum sensory input due to well-distributed pressure
Possible applications:
- movement therapy: one can exercise proximal joints (e.g. shoulder) while the distal ones (e.g. elbow, wrist and fingers) do not get a chance to get into a wrong pattern
- premature weight transfer to a plegic limb
- aid for limb control: e.g. In gait rehabilitation, an arm splint is applied to prevent associated reactions from occurring
Urias splints are made from a specially developed PVC. The inner layer is a unique soft PVC that feels pleasant to the patient and distributes pressure extremely evenly.
The outer layer is firmer and provides stability.
Because the splints are transparent, you always have perfect visual control of the position of the limb.
You can download a brochure with theoretical and practical explanations via the link to PANat.
Inflation must be done by mouth, because only then can you be sure of a good temperature and a maximum pressure of 40 mm Hg.
To prevent breathing fluid from entering the splint when inflating, special filters can be used.
For hygiene, small individual mouthpieces are available for use on the filters or on extension tubes (not directly on the splint).
The splint should not be applied to a limb in direct sunlight, otherwise a greenhouse effect will occur and burns may occur.
Safety regulations:
- during 'hands on' or 'hands off' therapy sessions (depending on the splint) max. 20 minutes or 1 hour/session for adult splints, with a maximum pressure of 40mmHg
- Always use indoors, out of direct sunlight
- clean splints after use with regular soap, allow to dry thoroughly with the zipper open and hang up the splint
- limited lifespan, depending on the conditions of use, cracks develop in the area of the weld seam after a while
