Urias®-Johnstone splint bariatric - extra wide
Special range of splints that are extra wide , specially intended for the treatment of heavier persons.
Inflatable splints with the mouth , developed by Margaret Johnstone. This concept is constantly being updated by the PANat scientific group
They are used in therapy for stroke and MS patients, plexus injuries and all conditions that can lead to contractures.
Target:
- positioning (for a limited time)
- maximum sensory input due to the well-distributed pressure
Possible applications:
- movement therapy: one can practice proximal joints (eg shoulder) while the distal (eg elbow, wrist and fingers) have no chance of getting into a wrong pattern
- early weight transfer to a plegic member
- aid for limb check: eg. an arm splint is applied in gait rehabilitation to prevent associated reactions from occurring
Urias splints are made from a specially developed PVC. The inner layer is a unique soft PVC that feels pleasant to the patient and distributes the pressure extremely evenly.
The outer layer is firmer and gives the stability.
Because the splints are transparent, one always has a perfect visual check on the position of the limb.
Via the link to PANat you can download a brochure with theoretical and practical explanation.
Inflation must be done by mouth, because only then will you be sure of a good temperature and a maximum pressure of 40 mm Hg.
Special filters can be used to prevent breathing fluid from entering the splint when inflating.
For hygiene reasons, small individual mouthpieces are available for use on the filters or on extension tubes (not directly on the splint).
The splint may not be applied to a limb in direct sunlight, otherwise a greenhouse effect will occur and burns may occur.
Safety instructions:
- during 'hands on' or 'hands off' therapy sessions (depending on the splint) max. 20 minutes or 1 hour / session for the splints for adults, with a maximum pressure of 40mmHg
- always use indoors, no direct sunlight
- clean the splints after each use with a normal soap, allow them to dry well with the zipper open by hanging the splint
- limited service life, depending on the conditions of use, after some time cracks will occur in the area of the weld
