Urias®-Johnstone splint (DC)

Mouth inflatable splints, developed by Margaret Johnstone. This concept is constantly updated by the scientific group PANat.

Adults, double chamber leg splint. Used to support, stabilize the hemiplegic leg in standing and facilitate trunk raising. So it is mainly used in an active practice situation. By inflating the front and back of the splint with different forces, maximum correction of the limb can be obtained.

Goal:
- positioning (for a limited time)
- maximum sensory input due to the well-distributed pressure

Possible applications:
- movement therapy: one can exercise proximal joints (e.g. shoulder) while distal joints (e.g. elbow, wrist and fingers) do not get a chance to get into a wrong pattern
- premature weight transfer on a pleural limb
- limb control aid: e.g. in gait rehabilitation, an arm splint is put on to prevent associated reactions from occurring

Uriass splints are made of a specially developed PVC. The inner layer is a unique soft PVC that feels pleasant to the patient and distributes the pressure extremely evenly.
The outer layer is firmer and provides stability.
Because the splints are transparent, you always have a perfect visual control of the position of the limb.

Inflating must be done by mouth, because only then can one be sure of a good temperature and a maximum pressure of 40 mm Hg.
To prevent breathing fluid from entering the splint when inflating, special filters can be used.

For hygiene, small individual mouthpieces are available for use on the filters or on extension tubes (not directly on the splint).

The splint should not be applied to a limb in direct sunlight, otherwise a greenhouse effect will occur and burns may occur.

Safety regulations:
- during 'hands on' or 'hands off' therapy sessions (depending on the splint) max. 20 minutes or 1 hour/session for the adult splints, with a maximum pressure of 40mmHg
- always use indoors, no direct sunlight
- clean the splints after each use with normal soap, let it dry well with the zipper open by hanging the splint
- limited service life, depending on the conditions of use, cracks appear in the vicinity of the weld after a while
- DO NOT BLOW TOO HARD
